September kicks off with a lot happening at once. There’s a referendum result out of Iceland, new strikes in the Strait of Hormuz, a changing of the guard at Apple, and a fossil find that pushes back the start of animal life by hundreds of millions of years. 1. Iceland votes no on rejoining EU talks. Icelanders rejected restarting membership negotiations by a narrow margin over the weekend, so the country’s long running EU question goes back in the freezer for at least two more years.
2. US strikes Iranian rocket launchers, and Tehran hits back. American forces hit two Iranian launchers in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran responded with strikes near Jordan and the UAE, and the exchange is the first direct clash between the two sides in weeks.
3. Trump announces a US stake in Venezuela’s oil fields. The administration says it struck a deal giving the US access to 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan crude, though energy experts warn it won’t do much for gas prices anytime soon.
4. Canada pushes back after Trump tries to rename Lake Ontario. Google renamed the lake “Lake America” for US users at Trump’s request, and Ontario’s premier answered with a giant billboard reminding everyone the lake isn’t going anywhere.
5. Grand Canyon flash flood forces dozens to evacuate. A wall of water tore through Bright Angel Canyon and wrecked footbridges near Phantom Ranch, killing at least two people and leaving one hiker still unaccounted for.
6. Fed chair Kevin Warsh hints a rate hike may be coming. In his first big speech since taking the job, Warsh said inflation is still too high, and traders now peg the odds of a September hike at close to a coin flip.
7. Aon buys rival broker USI for $17 billion. The insurance giant is doubling down on the middle market in its biggest deal since it bought NFP two years ago, and KKR walks away with roughly six times what it paid for USI back in 2017.
8. Dell buys AI startup Dataloop for $120 million. The Israeli company specializes in labeling and managing the messy data that trains AI models, and Dell wants that expertise built into its enterprise AI push.
9. Tim Cook hands the Apple keys to John Ternus. After 15 years running the company, Cook moves into the executive chairman role today, and Ternus takes over just as Apple gears up for its most ambitious product lineup in years, foldable iPhone included.
10. Scientists find 567 million year old fossils that rewrite animal history. A Canadian fossil site preserved some of the earliest creatures known to move around and reproduce sexually, pushing back the timeline for how complex animal life got its start.
